White Gold and Diamond Pendant

Re-use of previously enjoyed pieces is not uncommon. Many clients enjoy how this adds to the feeling of continuity when creating a family heirloom.

You can see from the first image that the rings were way past repair but the stones were still as good as when first cut and polished. The use of a double pendant loop helps to stop the pendant from flipping over on it back. This design can work well with many stones and metal combinations.

10K Yellow Gold Family Ring: Before and After.

The first image is the original ring set with round synthetic stones. Since one stone was missing, and the mount was worn, remodelling seemed necessary.

In the second image we have the new ring with genuine round faceted stones.

The family ring concept can be simple in design or something special, and in this case, more sculptural. The inside of the ring is not, as one would expect, round. It’s what jewellers refer to as ‘cushion shaped’. The reason for this is to help prevent the ring from turning on it’s own, which can create issues for the wearer.

While the back of the band appears to be wider than the top, that is an optical illusion. It is in fact the same width.

The stones have been set deep enough that the grains of metal holding them are below the top surface. This prevents wear and tear as well as requiring less metal to hold the stones. The most obvious and enjoyable benefit is that this shows more of the colour and brightness to the eye of the viewer.

A combination of design and craftsmanship turns a simple concept like the family ring into a piece of wearable art.

Catty
Pastel
8 1/2 in. x 11 1/2 in.
This is a portrait of our family pet that our son named when he was three years old. I wanted to capture that hopeful look that Catty would quietly project first thing in the morning as I entered the kitchen.

I was that three year old. I was replacing her first name, “Smudge”, which Dad gave her due to what had seemed like a permanent black mark above one eye.
Catty made it nineteen years, dying shortly after I left home for university. She’d eat anything I was eating, would guard me when I was in the bath and left three little scars, that I treasure, on one of my knuckles. She was a good old cat and we buried her in the garden beneath a bed of white lilies.  I’ve never had another pet, I don’t need one.

Platinum Emerald and Diamond Ring

Platinum cocktail ring set with round, brilliant cut diamonds and three round faceted emeralds.

A very enjoyable commission from a nice client, the ring is constructed from sheet and square wire using only 1650F platinum solder.

Plenty of thought goes into such a ring. You cannot afford to trip yourself up and find at some point you need to go backward to complete a part of the project. Then you risk having to start again, not a good thing!

Sometimes when I bring up my parents profession, people tell me that they or their friends make jewellery as well. Then I’m almost always shown plastic beads strung together or maybe a couple of simple copper ingots attached to some varnished twigs.

This?

This is jewellery.

And it’s not so much about materials, after a point, it’s about craftsmanship and actually earning a title. I can bang some 2x4s and sheet metal into a large enough box to fit a person, then call it a house, but I wouldn’t tell Frank Llyod Wright’s kid that “Oh yeah, I’m an architect too.”

18K Citrine earrings
The stones are 8mm round Optix cut and benefit from this new cutting pattern.
The settings are hand made old school, no casting but straight from flat strip, the butterflies and the posts are in 18K white as it is harder wearing and springs nicely to hold onto the posts.
Available in many semi precious coloured stones these earrings can be made in 6 or 8mm size to order.

Custom Gold Ring

14 K yellow and white gold ring mount In progress, and then finished in the lower image.

When designing a piece such as this it really helps if you can turn it around in your mind from the two dimensional sketch so most if not all challenges get thought through before the possibility of a mishap.

Celtic Knot Bracelet

14K yellow gold Etruscan style bracelet with Celtic knot motif set with round brilliants cut diamonds and pink sapphires.

The first image shows the finished construction and the second the Celtic design ready for the stones to be set.

I made this bracelet in the spring of 2011 so thought I should post it to show just what can be done with the Celtic design concept in a bracelet with minimal moving parts.

Cooperation between the customer and crafts person can produce stunning results produced (in some cases) after many hours of enjoyable work.
